Springing up in New Life

Springing up in New Life

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!

In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope

through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead”

1 Peter 1:3

We are now well into the Easter season of the church year. Yes, Easter is a season, not just a day. Often we think of “Easter” in terms of ”Easter Sunday” – the day filled with song, procession and joy as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and God’s gracious gift of new life. Yet, Easter Sunday also marks the beginning of the 50 days until the Day of Pentecost, which is the season of Easter. Easter Sunday’s celebration is just the beginning.

Easter Sunday seems so long ago doesn’t it? Easter Sunday was Apr. 4th (37 days ago!). I don’t know about you, but the last few weeks have been a blur. For me, the days seem to have run together. Here in Manitoba, we experienced April snow (nothing new, lol) and are now in the throngs of the third wave of the COVID pandemic. Over the past couple of weeks, COVID cases continue to rise, we are now living with yet another set of restrictions and the warm spring weather has had a slow start. Living in these pandemic times is hard and overwhelming.

It’s almost mid-May and the weather is warming up (yay!) and the grass is turning green. My perennials are starting to poke up from the ground, and the trees are budding. All of these signs of spring reminded me of Easter and God’s promise of new life in Christ. Just as the plants sprout from the earth, Jesus rose from the dead to bring us new life. Each year, as the ground thaws and green plants emerge form the soil, we witness new life in nature – “see the winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season for singing has come”. Song of Solomon 2:11-12

Sometimes we just need reminders, especially in these challenging times, that God is here with us. Right before our eyes, creation is springing up as God is at work making all things new. We are also made new in Christ and through God’s great mercy, we have living hope. Pretty amazing!

So how might you and your family spring up in your new life in Christ? Perhaps…

  • keep a sign of Easter (cross, flower) in a prominent place in your home
  • make a list of things you are grateful for
  • reach out to someone in need
  • take a walk, pausing to notice the things you see & praise God
  • keep a list of a new thing you notice each day
  • plant some seedlings and watch them grow
  • try to identify one place each day where you encountered Jesus
  • pray for joy and a spirit of love & generosity

May the promise of Easter fill you with the hope and new life we have in Jesus.
